The Coolray is 1.81 metres wide and shorter than a Corolla, and you sit high enough to see all four corners. Reversing it into a standard bay takes one attempt. If you've been driving a hatchback at home and worry an SUV will feel like a bus, this one won't.

It also rides higher than a hatchback, so the speed bumps scattered through residential streets and the steeper mall ramp transitions pass under it without the wince you get in a low sedan.

Quicker than it has any right to be

Most crossovers this size are slow, and you feel it the first time you join Sheikh Zayed Road from a short slip road. The Coolray isn't. With 177 hp it reaches 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds, which is hot-hatch territory from a few years ago. It holds 120 without strain, and overtaking doesn't require planning. So the city car doesn't fall apart the day you decide to drive to Abu Dhabi.

Pack like it's a hatchback

The boot is 330 litres, and you should plan around that number. One large suitcase plus a soft bag fits fine, and a couple with carry-ons will never think about it. Two large cases and two carry-ons for a family airport run means folding a seat or putting a bag on someone's lap. If your trip starts and ends at DXB with a full luggage set for four, rent a proper sedan or a bigger SUV instead.

Summer notes

A small cabin is an advantage in July. The Coolray's AC pulls a sun-baked interior down to comfortable in a few minutes, quicker than the big SUVs we run, simply because there's less air to cool. Fuel costs stay low too: at 13 to 14 km per litre, a week of school runs and office commutes usually means one visit to the pump. Salik tolls and any RTA fines are billed to you as the driver, which is standard for every rental in Dubai, and worth remembering on routes that cross multiple gates.

Who should take it

Rent the Coolray if you're one or two people, or a family that travels light, and your week is malls, commutes and errands with the odd highway run. It parks easily, moves quickly and sips fuel. Skip it if four adults and their luggage are part of the plan, or if you want space for a stroller plus a full shop; the Emgrand sedan or a mid-size SUV will suit you better.
