Rent Geely Tugella 2024 in Dubai

Built for the fast lane

The numbers first: a 2.0 litre turbo with 238 hp and all wheel drive, through a proper automatic, reaching 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds. In practice that means the Tugella overtakes on demand at highway speed, in the zone above 100 where cheaper crossovers go quiet and stop responding. It tracks straight and settled at the limit, wind and road noise stay in the background, and long stints leave you fresher than you'd expect. Drivers coming out of German SUVs return it pleasantly surprised, and drivers coming out of budget crossovers return it converted.

All wheel drive, within reason

Power reaches all four wheels, which pays off in real traction pulling hard out of junctions and composure in the rare rain that turns Dubai's roads greasy. Set expectations correctly though: this is a road biased crossover, not a dune car. A firm sand track to a Hatta campsite is fine; deep sand and deflated tyres are a job for a Land Cruiser. Rent it for the tarmac, where it's excellent.

The boot is the catch

The number to sit with is 326 litres. The sloping coupe roofline that makes the Tugella the best looking Geely also cuts its luggage space below our compact Coolray's, in a car half a metre longer. Two medium cases and soft bags fit under the cover; a family's full airport load does not go in flat. If the mission is four people plus proper luggage, the Emgrand sedan carries far more for far less. The Tugella is a car for people, pace and distance, not for cargo.

Running it in a Dubai summer

Expect around 12.8 km per litre driven sensibly, less if you enjoy the engine, with the 54 litre tank giving a comfortable 600 km or so between fills. The climate system copes with the height of summer without fuss; the cabin is larger than a hatchback's, so give it a couple of minutes after the car has sat in the sun and it settles to cold and stays there. Salik crossings and any RTA fines bill to you during the rental, and E11 regulars will cross gates daily, so factor that into a commuting week.

Book it if

You drive far, you drive often, and you like driving. Business travellers doing the Dubai to Abu Dhabi corridor, couples touring the Emirates, residents who want one comfortable car for everything except the desert: this is the strongest all-rounder we run in the Business class, and the black paint photographs as sharp as it looks at the valet. If luggage volume tops your list, choose the Emgrand. If budget tops it, the Coolray gets you most of the speed for less. Everyone else should spend the extra and take the Tugella.
