Extend, Cancel or Return Early: Changing a Car Rental Booking in Dubai

Tell the company before the change happens, not after. That one rule covers extending, cancelling and returning early, because in every case the timing decides what it costs. An extension agreed the day before the car is due back is priced like a booking. The same extra day, unannounced, is priced like a late return. A cancellation a day before delivery costs nothing. The same cancellation an hour after the driver has left with the car costs a day, or a lot more on a prepaid rate.

Below are the three cases in turn. The first is how to extend a car rental in Dubai and what happens to the rate. The second is cancelling and getting the money back. The third is the awkward one: returning early on a weekly or monthly plan and finding out that "unused days" mostly don't exist.

Extending the rental

Get in touch before the period ends

Your flight moved or the project ran on. Whatever the reason, the extension has to be agreed before the current period runs out, and it's a phone call or a WhatsApp message rather than a form. We run both lines 24/7. Give the booking reference, the plate or the car, and the new return date, and ask for the confirmation in writing. A message on your phone showing the new date and the new rate is what settles any argument later.

Two things can stop an extension. The car may already be booked out to someone else for the days you want. That's most likely on a cheap economy car in December. And your licence, passport or visa has to cover the extended period as well as the original one. If the licence expires mid-extension the insurer won't cover the days after it, so check the dates before you call.

Where the car isn't free, the usual answer is a swap to a comparable car, priced from the swap date. Ask early enough and it's rarely a problem. Ask on the last morning and you're taking whatever is on the lot.

What the extra days cost

This is where companies differ, and where you should ask a direct question. Some carry your original daily rate forward. Some re-quote the extra days at whatever the rate is that week, which in high season means more. Some add a flat extension fee on top.

We price the extension at the plan you move into. A five-day booking on a Nissan Sunny at AED 75 a day, extended by four days, becomes a nine-day rental, and nine days sits inside the weekly plan. Weekly undercuts seven separate days, so from day eight onwards the per-day rate can go down rather than up. Extend a three-week rental past the month and it moves into the monthly plan, which is cheaper again and includes servicing with a replacement car. The way monthly car rental works explains the maths from the other direction.

The deposit doesn't change on an extension when you keep the same car. With us it's fixed per car, so it only moves if the extension involves a swap to a car that carries a different hold. The mileage allowance is set by the length of the booking, so the extra days bring extra kilometres, but the figure on the agreement is the one that counts. Ask for the new allowance when you confirm the date, and don't assume the extension is unlimited, because nothing on our fleet is.

If you keep the car without calling

Then you're not extending. You're returning late, and the company treats it that way. Most Dubai firms give a short grace period, anywhere from half an hour to a few hours, and after that the clock runs. The international majors typically charge a full extra day once you're past the grace window. Local companies vary between an hourly rate and a full day, and the hourly rates can be steep enough that a full day is the cheaper outcome.

With us a short delay is absorbed by the grace period and a significant overrun can trigger a full day. The difference between that and a cheap planned extension is one phone call, made before the return time rather than after it. If you're stuck on Sheikh Zayed Road at 5 pm with the car due at 6, call then. Don't wait until you arrive.

Cancelling a booking

With us

Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before delivery. Inside that window, call or message us rather than assuming, since by then the car and driver are usually committed to your slot. Then cancel by phone or WhatsApp with the booking reference. Payment is taken at booking, so a cancellation before the cut-off means a refund of what you paid. A date change or a switch to a different car is handled the same way, as a change to the booking rather than a cancel and rebook.

At other companies

The market runs on tiers. Free cancellation up to 48 hours before pickup is the common rule at the bigger firms, and 24 hours at many of the smaller ones. Inside the window the charge is usually one day's rental, or a fixed fee of roughly AED 100 to 200. A no-show, where you neither cancel nor collect, can forfeit the whole prepayment.

Two traps sit outside the tiers. The first is the prepaid or "pay now" rate. It's cheaper than the pay-at-pickup price for exactly one reason: it's non-refundable, or refundable only with a fee that eats most of the saving. If your dates aren't fixed, the flexible rate is the cheaper one, whatever the checkout page says. The second is the aggregator booking. If you booked through a comparison site rather than the rental company, the contract is with the aggregator. The refund goes back through them, on their timescale and under their cancellation terms, not the rental company's. Cancel through the same channel you booked, and keep the confirmation.

If a company keeps money it shouldn't, the UAE's consumer protection law is the backstop. In Dubai the complaint goes to the Department of Economy and Tourism on 600 545555, with the booking confirmation and the cancellation message as your evidence.

Returning early and getting money back

The honest answer for the whole market is that on a daily or weekly rental, almost no Dubai company refunds unused days. The rate you paid was for the period you booked, and handing the keys back on day five of a seven-day booking simply ends the rental early. The international majors put this in their FAQs in plain words.

Monthly plans are worse in a way that surprises people. Some companies do refund the unused part of a month, but only after re-rating the rental at the shorter plan's price. Say you booked a month at AED 1,800 and returned after eighteen days. The company re-prices those eighteen days as two weeks at the weekly rate plus four days at the daily rate. That total often lands within a few dirhams of the monthly price you already paid. The refund exists on paper and vanishes in the arithmetic. Companies that don't re-rate usually don't refund at all, so either way the money rarely comes back.

We don't publish an early-return rule, so we're not going to invent one here. If your dates are uncertain, ask us before you book, and get the answer in the same WhatsApp thread as your confirmation.

There's a better route than hoping for a refund. Book the shorter plan and extend it. An extension with us takes the rate of the plan it lands in. So a two-week booking that grows into a month is charged at the monthly rate for the whole period, not as two weeks plus two more weeks. You lose nothing by starting short, and you never need the early-return conversation at all. The one thing you can't shorten is the deposit release, which runs 15 to 25 days after the car comes back whatever day that turns out to be. The deposit refund timeline sets out why.

Late returns, cancellations and early returns are the paperwork end of a rental. The other things that go wrong, an accident, a breakdown, an impound, are covered in the guide to rental car problems in Dubai. If you're still choosing dates, every car in our fleet shows its daily, weekly and monthly price side by side. That makes the short-plan-and-extend route easy to price before you commit.

FAQ — Common Questions Answered.

Can I extend my rental by WhatsApp?

Yes, and it's the way most extensions happen. Send the booking reference and the new return date to our 24/7 line before the current period ends. The new rate and date come back in the same thread. Keep that message, because it's your proof of the agreed change. If the car is already booked out for the extra days, a swap to a comparable car is the usual answer, priced from the swap date. Check that your licence and visa still cover the new dates before you ask.

Will the extension cost the same daily rate?

Not always, and with us it can be lower. We price the extension at the plan you move into. Extra days that push a booking past seven days pick up the weekly rate, and past a month they pick up the monthly rate. Other companies carry the original rate forward, re-quote at the current price, or add an extension fee, so ask before you agree. An unannounced extra day is charged as a late return, which is the expensive version.

Is cancellation free?

With us, yes, provided you cancel before the cut-off shown on your confirmation email, which sits ahead of the delivery slot. You get what you paid back. Elsewhere the free window is usually 24 or 48 hours before pickup, with a day's rental or a fixed fee charged inside it. Prepaid rates are often non-refundable at any point, and aggregator bookings refund through the aggregator, so cancel through whichever channel you booked.

Do I get a refund if I return the car early?

Usually not. On daily and weekly rentals across Dubai there's no refund for unused days. On monthly plans some companies refund after re-rating the rental at the shorter plan's price, which can leave you with almost nothing. We don't publish an early-return rule, so ask before booking if your dates might move. The safer approach is to book the shorter period and extend, since the extra days then take the rate of the longer plan.
