It is also lighter on fuel than the V8, which matters when the fun makes you drive twice as far as planned. Traction control stays on, please. A rear-driven coupe on a dusty roundabout deserves your respect.

Two seats, two shelves, one weekend bag

The Camaro lists four seats, and the rear pair are best treated as leather-trimmed luggage space. Adults do not go back there for more than a photo. The boot is small for a car this size, and with the roof folded it shrinks further, so pack soft bags rather than hard cases. Two people with weekend luggage travel fine. Two people with airport check-in bags need to plan, and four people need a different car entirely.

Driving it around the city

The nose sits low, so take Marina ramps and the steeper mall entrances at an angle and a crawl, and treat unpainted speed bumps as personal insults waiting to happen. Visibility over your shoulder is limited with the roof up, so set the mirrors wide. Salik tolls and any fines are yours, and this is a car that speed cameras notice, so watch the limits on the open stretches. Drivers need to be at least 21 with a year of licence history.

Should you book it

Book the Camaro for a winter weekend, an anniversary, or any trip where the drive is the point. It rewards couples and photographers, and it turns an ordinary Thursday evening into an occasion for very reasonable money by sports car standards. Skip it if you're moving people or luggage, if your week is all valet queues and school runs, or if it's July and you were picturing wind in your hair at noon.
