The window is October to April
Between November and March the roof can be down all day, with evening temperatures in the high teens and low twenties. October and April are morning-and-evening months, roof up from late morning. From May to September it's over 40 degrees by ten in the morning, and the roof comes down after nine at night or not at all.
The car is fine in the heat. The person in it isn't. If your trip is in July, a convertible still works for evening drives along Jumeirah Beach Road, but for daytime driving you'll be in a coupe that happens to fold.
One more seasonal note. The shamal wind blows sand through February, March, and April, and when the sky goes orange the roof goes up, whatever the temperature.
Every roof here is fabric, and they differ in speed
The BMW 420i has the best roof: about 18 seconds, and it works while rolling at car-park speed, so you can drop it as you leave a tower ramp. The Mini Cooper is similar, about 18 seconds at low speed. The Camaro takes around 20 seconds and prefers a standstill.
The Mustang wants you to release a latch above the windscreen by hand first, then the motor does the rest in a few seconds, and you'll be stopped to do it. The MG Cyberster is the quickest, roughly 10 seconds, and can open on the move. If the roof will go up and down several times a day, which in Dubai it will, the 420i and the Cyberster make it painless.
What the boot loses with the roof down
The Mustang keeps its 324-litre boot whether the roof is up or down, which is why it's the convertible for an airport run with two large cases. The 420i has 385 litres roof up and 300 roof down, so load the cases first and drop the roof after. The Mini has 215 litres, one case and a soft bag.
The Camaro has about 207 litres and, with the roof folded, an opening narrow enough that a hard case has to go in before the roof comes down. The Cyberster's boot takes a weekend bag and not much more.
Convertible car rental Dubai: which one to book
The Mustang for two people with luggage and the most car for the money. The 420i for the quietest cabin, the best roof, and the one you'd happily drive every day for a month. The Mini for anyone staying in the Marina or JBR, where its size makes the parking easy and the roof-down drive along the beach is the whole point.
The Camaro for the person who's already decided, with the caveat that its rear visibility is the worst here. The Cyberster is the one to think about: a two-seat electric roadster whose range drops noticeably with the roof down and the air conditioning working, so it needs a charging plan, and the whole subject of plugging in sits with the electric cars.
