Power, and where it runs out

The 1.5 turbo makes 184 hp, which is more than this class usually gets, and the dual clutch gearbox is smooth once rolling. On Sheikh Zayed Road it holds 120 easily and overtakes with a short, deliberate squeeze rather than a lunge. Two honest caveats. The gearbox can hesitate for a beat in stop-start creep, the way most dual clutches do, so leave a little more gap in Deira traffic. And this is front wheel drive with 160 mm of clearance, so Hatta on tarmac is a lovely day trip, but the dunes are off the menu. Do not let the SUV shape talk you into sand.

Day to day in the city

At 1.89 metres wide the JS6 needs the full bay in an older mall car park, and you will fold the mirrors more than once. Newer developments with generous bays are no trouble. Speed bumps and steep Marina ramps are a non-event with this clearance, which is one real advantage over a low sedan. Salik tolls and RTA fines pass to you as the renter, and child seats are required for under-fours, which matters here because this is exactly the car families book.
