Book the JS4. Both are five-seat, front-wheel-drive SUVs, but the JS4 has a turbocharged 1.5 and the S3 a 1.6 without one, and on the Sheikh Zayed Road on-ramps that difference is the whole car. The S3 gets to 120, and its gearbox holds the engine high and loud while it does. The JS4 pulls from low revs, sits quiet at the limit, and has the wider cabin and the longer boot floor.
The case for the S3 is the rate on the day and nothing else. It's the older design and the cheaper card, and for a car that lives between a tower car park in JVC, a mall, and the school run, it does the job. Take it for a month of that. Don't take it for a daily Abu Dhabi commute.
The JS4 runs 2023, 2024, and 2025 on our grid and the S3 runs 2023 to 2026. Neither changed much across those years, so the year is a kilometres question rather than an equipment one. Book the newest one showing.
The J7 and the JS6 at the two ends
The J7 is a 2023 liftback, and it's the JAC for someone who was about to book a sedan. It has five seats, front-wheel drive, the same 1.5 turbo as the JS4, and a tailgate that lifts with the rear glass, so a folded pushchair or a set of golf clubs goes in flat. It cross-shops with the MG5 and the Geely Emgrand on the sedan grid, and it has more room in the back than either.
The JS6 is a 2024 car and the largest JAC we list. It keeps five seats and the same 1.5 turbo, but it sits in the standard class rather than economy, with a longer body and a boot that takes a family of four's cases for a week. It's a size up from the JS4, not a seven-seater. For seven seats, the Jetour X70 Plus and the MG RX9 are the cars on our fleet. The Haval H6 is the JS6's direct rival at the same size.
Is a JAC equipped like a Japanese car in this class
On equipment, yes, and usually a little more. The JS4 has a large touchscreen with phone mirroring, a surround-view camera, keyless start, and cruise control, which is more than the Nissan Kicks carries in the same class. The phone connects first time, which is what most renters test in the first ten minutes.

A JAC suits a resident or a visitor on a month's rental who wants a newer, better-equipped small SUV than the Japanese badge buys in the economy class. The JS4 is the pick for a daily commute. The S3 is the pick for a car that rarely leaves the city.
Three groups should look elsewhere. Anyone who wants four-wheel drive should, because every JAC on our grid is front-wheel drive, and the Hatta track or a dune weekend needs the Patrol or the Tahoe from the larger SUVs. Anyone who needs seven seats wants the X70 Plus or the RX9. And anyone who wants a badge the valet recognises is better off in the Kicks.
Between the JS4 and its closest rivals on our fleet, the MG ZS is the same size without the turbo, and the Geely Coolray has the turbo and the nicer cabin. If a Coolray is showing on the day, drive that. If it isn't, the JS4 loses nothing that matters.
