The MG3, the most-booked MG rental in Dubai, comes in three model years, and they're the same car. All three are the current-shape hatchback with the 1.5-litre engine, so pick by colour and by the kilometres on the clock, not by year. The car people walk past is the MG5, a full sedan with a bigger boot that goes out for about what the hatchback does. If you rent MG cars in Dubai for a month of commuting, start there. MG is SAIC's badge, one of China's largest carmakers, and in the UAE it's the brand that puts a fully equipped new car where the Japanese badges give you a base model. Even the MG3 has a 10.25-inch touchscreen with phone mirroring and a reversing camera. Dealers cover all seven emirates, so parts don't hold a fleet up. What you give up against a Nissan is some highway refinement, and nothing you'd notice inside Dubai.
Three MG3 years, one car: take the 2024
The 2024, unless you want the fewest kilometres on the clock, in which case the 2026. All three years are the current-shape MG3 with the same engine, screen and camera. What changes is choice: the 2024 cars we list come in blue, grey, silver and white, and the 2025 and 2026 cars are silver. A 2026 has done fewer kilometres, and that's the only reason to prefer it.
It's about 4.1 metres long, parks in the tight bays under JBR and Marina Walk, and the boot takes one large case and a cabin bag. Two adults with a full-size case each are better off in the MG5. Against the other small hatchbacks, the Opel Corsa is the sharper drive and the Citroen C4 has the bigger boot; both sit on the hatchback grid.
Rent MG cars in Dubai by the month: the MG5 people overlook
The MG5 is the best-value MG for anyone renting by the month. It's a 4.67-metre sedan on the same 1.5-litre engine with a boot of around 400 litres, so two full-size cases lie flat under the parcel shelf. It's quieter than the MG3 at 120 km/h on the E11, which matters on a daily Abu Dhabi run more than anything the hatchback does better in a car park.
Between the years, take the 2024 for the refreshed front end and the newer screen; the 2022 is the same body and engine, and fine if the 2024 cars are out. Against the Nissan Sunny and Geely Emgrand on our economy grids, the MG5 has the larger screen and the nicer cabin, and the Sunny has the softer ride.
ZS, Whale or RX9
The ZS if it's two people, the Whale if you want more room without a third row, and the RX9 if you need seven seats. The ZS is a compact crossover on the same 1.5-litre engine, about the size of a Nissan Kicks or Geely Coolray. Of the three years, take the 2025, the newer-shape car with the updated cabin.
The Whale is the one nobody searches for: a five-seat SUV a size up from the ZS, with a coupe roofline and a nicer cabin. Two people with a week of luggage should look at it before the RX9.
The RX9 is the family car, with seven seats, all-wheel drive and a 2.0-litre turbo. Two adults, three children and their luggage fit with the third row folded; with all seven seats up, the boot takes cabin bags and a folded stroller. The Jetour X70 Plus does the same job on front-wheel drive and the Exeed VX is plusher; the RX9 has the all-wheel drive and the newest cabin. All three sit with the other seven-seat SUVs.
The MG8 for the highway, the Cyberster for the weekend
The MG8 is the quiet one. A 2026 sedan with a 2.0-litre engine and more rear legroom than the MG5, it's the MG for a fortnight of Sheikh Zayed Road meetings and the Abu Dhabi run, and the one to show someone about to book a Mazda 6.
The Cyberster is a two-seat electric convertible with all-wheel drive, and it's an October-to-April car. Roof down in July, the air conditioning loses to the heat and the range goes with it. Count on well under the sticker range: enough for a Dubai weekend or a Hatta run, not enough for Abu Dhabi and back without a stop at a DEWA Green Charger. If it's the open roof you want and not the electric part, the Ford Mustang and BMW 420i on the convertible grid are petrol and have four seats.
The short version: the MG3 for a week in the city, the MG5 for a month, the RX9 for a family, and the 2024 MG3 over the 2026 unless the odometer bothers you.

How does the air conditioning in an MG cope with a Dubai summer?
Well enough that nobody hands one back over it. The MG3 and MG5 cabins are small, so a car that's sat in an open bay all afternoon is comfortable within a few minutes of driving, and the ZS and Whale take only a little longer with their larger glass area. The RX9 has vents for the second row, so children in the back aren't waiting on the front ones. The one to watch is the Cyberster, and only with the roof down, so keep the roof up from May to September and it cools like any other closed car.
Can I take an MG to Hatta, or onto the sand?
Hatta yes, the sand no. The road to Hatta is tarmac the whole way and any MG on the grid does it, the MG3 included, though the RX9 is the one to take with a full car on the climbs. The RX9's all-wheel drive is for a wet roundabout and the gravel car park at the wadi pools, not for dunes. None of the MGs has the clearance or the tyres for sand, and a stuck front-drive ZS is an expensive afternoon. If the dunes are the point of the trip, the Nissan Patrol on our Nissan grid is the car, and off-road use of any car is confirmed with us at booking rather than assumed.
Does the MG RX9 fit seven people and their luggage?
Seven people with cabin bags, not seven with a case each. The layout most families settle on is six seats: fold one half of the third row and two large cases go in beside the remaining seat, which is how a family of five plus a grandparent does the Abu Dhabi day. The third row itself is for children or a short hop across town, and adults sat there for an hour on the E11 will ask to swap. Seven adults with a week of luggage is a van job, and the Hyundai Staria on our van grid with its last row left empty carries the people and the bags.
Is it worth it to rent MG cars in Dubai instead of a Nissan or a Geely?
If you want the newest car for the money, yes. If you want the quickest, look at the Geely. The Sunny on our Nissan grid is a 2020 and the MG5s are 2022 and 2024, so the MG is years newer, and it shows in the seats and the trim. The Geely Coolray has a turbo engine and is the quicker of the compact crossovers, and the ZS answers with a calmer drive and a lighter fuel bill. What MG can't offer is a full-size 4WD, so a Patrol-shaped trip belongs on the Nissan grid however much you like the small cars.
Can the MG Cyberster do Dubai to Abu Dhabi and back on one charge?
Plan it as a charge each way, not one. Leave Dubai full and the 130 km to Abu Dhabi is easy. The trouble starts when you've driven around the capital all day and turn for home on half a battery with the roof down. The Cyberster takes DC fast charging, so a stop at a public fast charger while you eat brings it from low to about 80 percent in around 40 minutes, and that's the stop to build into the day. In December with the roof up the margin is wider, and a charger stop in Abu Dhabi is still the habit to keep.
