Our BMW grid is two cars: a blue 2024 420i convertible and a white 2025 X1. Rent BMW cars in Dubai from Bintali and that's the choice, a rear-wheel-drive four-seat drop-top for the cooler months and a front-wheel-drive small SUV for the everyday. If you came for a 5 Series or an X5, neither is here. Comprehensive insurance is included in every rate, which on a car this expensive to repair is the line to read first. The 420i is the winter car. The X1 is the one you'd still be happy with in August.
The 420i: a BMW convertible rental in Dubai's winter
The 420i is the car to book from November to March, when the roof stays down all day. The 2.0-litre turbo makes 184 hp through the rear wheels, the fabric roof folds at car-park speed, and the rear seats take children or bags.
What catches people is the cameras. A quiet, quick convertible on Sheikh Zayed Road invites a heavy foot. Any fine arrives after the trip, billed to you at cost and itemised, with nothing added by us, and Salik, parking, and fuel are handled the same way.
From May to September the roof stays up in the daytime, and you're paying for a convertible and using a coupe.
The X1 as a quiet daily
The X1 is the BMW to book for a month of work, the Marina, and the occasional airport run. The 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo makes 136 hp and drives the front wheels, enough and never exciting. The boot is 540 litres, and the short body makes the older Deira car parks easy. It's the smaller and slower car of the two, and for a daily it's the better one.
The 420i for winter weeks, the X1 for everything longer
Book the 420i for a winter week or fortnight with one passenger, and the X1 for anything longer, any family, or any summer.
The 5 Series, X5, and X7 aren't on our fleet. For a big SUV, the Nissan Patrol and Chevrolet Tahoe among the luxury cars are what we rent. For a business sedan, the MG8 and Exeed TXL sit with the X1 in the business class. And if a convertible is the point and the badge isn't, the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro, and MINI Cooper drop-tops are on the convertible grid with the 420i.

Can I rent BMW cars in Dubai with the roof down in summer?
You can, and after about nine in the evening it's pleasant on the inland roads, though at JBR and the Marina the August humidity makes a roof-down drive sticky rather than cool. The roof takes around 18 seconds, so you can drop it at a red light once the sun's gone and put it back up when you park, which is the pattern of a summer 420i rental. If your dates are summer and the drive is the point, book the X1 and keep the 420i for a November trip.
Is the BMW 420i's rear-wheel drive a problem on Dubai roads?
No. Dubai's roads are dry almost every day of the year, the stability control stays on, and 184 hp through the rear wheels is not enough to unsettle the car in normal driving. The risk is the temptation, not the driveline.
How much luggage fits in the BMW 420i with the roof down?
About 300 litres with the roof folded and 385 with it up, which is two cabin bags and a soft holdall, not a large checked case. The roof needs its own space in the boot, so the folding partition has to be clipped down before it'll move. If the roof refuses to fold at the airport with the bags in, that's the reason, and repacking with the partition down fixes it. For two people arriving with a large case each, take the X1; the 420i is a car for a week when the luggage stays at the hotel.
How do speed camera fines reach me on a BMW rental?
Through the plate first, and not always straight away. A camera on the 420i's last afternoon can post to the car's file days after you've handed back the key, so the bill for a trip isn't final on the day you return. You can check every line yourself against the Dubai Police fines enquiry using the plate number on your contract. Across the border in Abu Dhabi the cameras have no tolerance above the posted limit, and the E11 past Ghantoot is where a quick convertible tends to collect one.
Is the BMW X1 big enough for a family of four with luggage?
Yes, for four people with two large cases and two cabin bags, and the 40:20:40 split rear seat means a stroller or a set of golf clubs can go through the middle with a child seat on each side. Where it gets tight is five with checked luggage, or four with a large case each plus a stroller. At that point the seven-seat MG RX9 or the Patrol are the cars to look at. For a month, the X1 stays the better choice, because it parks where the RX9 won't.
