One Cooper convertible, and where it makes sense
It's the 2025 car, with the new cabin and its round OLED screen in the middle of the dash, a 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder, front-wheel drive, and four seats. The fabric roof takes about 18 seconds and works at up to around 30 km/h, so it goes down on the ramp out of a Marina tower car park. It also has a sunroof position where only the front section slides back, which is the setting for a midday drive in April.
Where it makes sense is the Marina, JBR, and the Palm. At under four metres long it fits the tight beachside bays at JBR and the tower visitor spaces where a Mustang needs two attempts. The drive it exists for is the Palm crescent or the beach road at dusk.

Can you rent MINI cars in Dubai in the summer and still use the roof?
Yes, but the roof is an evening thing from May to September, and summer is also when the car is easiest to get. Driving it in the heat is fine. Parking it is the problem: a fabric roof left on a surface bay at noon turns the cabin into an oven and the seats into something you can't sit on in shorts, so use the basement at the mall and the tower and skip the open bay by the beach. After dark it's 33 degrees and humid rather than 45 and dry, and at 80 along Jumeirah Beach Road with the roof down that's comfortable in a way it isn't at a standstill. Give the air conditioning five minutes with the roof up before you fold it, and don't bother with the sunroof-only position in August, because it lets the heat in without the breeze.
Is the MINI Cooper convertible quick enough for Sheikh Zayed Road?
Easily. The 2.0 turbo makes about 200 horsepower, gets to 100 in around seven seconds, and holds 120 in top gear with the roof up without the engine sounding busy. It's a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic with no manual option, so the Marina queues are painless. What catches people out is the wheelbase rather than the power: at 120 with the roof down, the gust off a passing truck on the Abu Dhabi road moves this car more than it would a 420i, so the roof goes up for the long straights and comes down where the limit is 80 or less.
How much luggage fits in the MINI Cooper convertible?
A checked-size hard case doesn't, and the opening is the limit rather than the litres. Two people with a cabin case each manage by putting the second one on the back seat, which is what the back seat is for on this car when it's two of you. The rear backrest folds for long items, and the roof has a load-assist position that lifts the folded rear section out of the way to widen the opening, so ask us to show you at handover because it isn't obvious. If you're landing at DXB with checked bags, load them with the roof up in the car park and fold it once you're on the road.
Can I cancel a MINI Cooper booking if my dates change?

There are two caveats. The limit drops on the mountain sections, and the cameras sit exactly where it drops. And the wadi tracks beyond the dam are gravel and rock that a front-wheel-drive car on low-profile tyres has no business on, so park at the dam and go on foot from there.
