Haval is Great Wall Motor's SUV brand, and in the UAE it's known for two cars, the Jolion and the H6. That is what Bintali has on the grid: two 2024 Jolions, one grey and one green, and a 2024 H6 in light blue. All three are 1.5-litre turbo petrol, front-wheel drive, with five seats. Haval is the SUV-only badge of Great Wall Motor, which has sold cars in the UAE for years. Our two models are Gulf-spec 2024 cars. The honest desk view is that they're newer and better equipped than a Japanese SUV of the same size at the rent they go for, and the trade-off is a badge nobody at the office will recognise.
Both have a turbocharged 1.5-litre engine, a dual-clutch automatic, a large central touchscreen with phone mirroring, a reversing camera, and air conditioning designed for this climate. Neither has four-wheel drive. These are not desert cars, and the Jolion in particular is a tall hatchback in an SUV suit.

Take the H6 if luggage or a family is involved and the Jolion if it's you and the city. The H6 has close to 600 litres of boot, which takes four large cases without folding anything. The Jolion has about 337, which is one large case, a cabin bag, and a weekly shop.
The Jolion pays that back in the city. At 4.47 m it's the size of a Nissan Kicks or an MG ZS, and it goes up a JLT tower ramp and into a tight bay without the corner-scraping the 4.65 m H6 invites. The gearbox and the August air conditioning
The one thing to know before you drive either Haval is the dual-clutch gearbox. From a standstill it takes a beat to engage, so the first crawl in Al Khail Road traffic feels hesitant next to the automatic in a Japanese car. Once you're rolling it shifts cleanly, and the engine has enough torque for the 120 km/h stretch to Abu Dhabi. If you know you can't stand a dual-clutch, the Kicks or the MG ZS on their own grids are the cars to look at instead.
The air conditioning is not a worry. Both cars have rear vents and cool a cabin that's been parked in the sun quickly enough for an August afternoon. That's the thing people quietly fear about a new Chinese badge, and with this one they shouldn't.
No four-wheel drive here, so borrow from the Geely and VW grids
If you want four-wheel drive, the Haval grid can't help. Is Haval a good car to rent in Dubai, or will I regret it?
For a rental week, yes, and the reliability question has a short answer: both are 2024 cars inside the manufacturer's warranty, and any fault in them is ours to sort, not yours. What people do call about on day one is the screen. The air conditioning controls on both cars mostly live in the touchscreen rather than on knobs, so ask us to show you the shortcut bar at handover before you're hunting for the fan speed at a red light. Pair your phone at the same time, and bring a cable in case the car wants one.
Is the Haval H6 on your grid the hybrid?
No. The H6 on the grid is the 1.5-litre turbo petrol, not the H6 HEV that's also sold in the UAE, and the same goes for both Jolions. Expect around 8 litres per 100 km around town and closer to 7 on a steady E11 run, which is ordinary for a petrol SUV of this size. If the point was to rent something electrified, the electric cars are on their own grid.
Can I rent Haval cars in Dubai and cancel if my plans change?
Yes, and the useful detail is timing. Message us as soon as the trip falls through rather than on the morning, because a released Jolion usually goes to the next person the same day. If you're switching from the Jolion to the H6, or the other way round, say so instead of cancelling and we move the booking across. A change of a day either side is handled the same way.
Is there room in the back of the Haval Jolion for two adults?
Yes, more than its length suggests. The Jolion's wheelbase is 2.7 m, longer than a Kicks or a ZS, so two adults sit behind two adults without their knees in the seat backs, and the middle of the floor is nearly flat. Three across the back is fine for the school run and tiring by Abu Dhabi. The H6 adds only about 4 cm of wheelbase, so what you get for its extra length is the boot rather than legroom.
How does the Haval's dual-clutch gearbox feel in Dubai traffic?
Hesitant for the first metre off the line, and two habits make it a non-issue. Press the Auto Hold button next to the electronic parking brake, so the car sits on a JLT tower ramp or an Al Khail Road on-ramp without rolling back while the clutch takes up. In crawling traffic, leave a car length and let it roll rather than inching forward with small taps on the throttle, which is what makes a dual-clutch feel jerky. Do those two and by the second morning you won't think about it.
