Sized for the job

The Jolion's dimensions are its best feature. Short overhangs and a tall seating position make it easy to judge, tight U-turns come back without a shuffle, and bays that force bigger SUVs into three-point entries take it first time. If you're staying somewhere with cramped visitor parking, in an older building or a busy tower, that convenience shows up several times a day, which is more than can be said for most spec-sheet numbers.

The boot, measured honestly

There are 337 litres behind the rear seats. In practice that's one large case plus a cabin bag, or two medium cases packed carefully, and the parcel shelf comes out to help. A couple arriving at DXB will manage fine. A family of four with full-size luggage will not, and folding the seats fixes it only if two of those four stay behind. Soft bags on the back seat cover the overflow, so long as the middle seat isn't spoken for. Treat the Jolion as a two-traveller airport car and a four-person town car, and it never disappoints.

Summer behaviour

The AC does its job without theatre. The cabin is compact, which works in your favour in July because there's simply less hot air to move, and it reaches comfortable faster than the big SUVs parked next to it. Rear passengers sit close enough to the front vents that nobody bakes, though on the hottest afternoons the first minute is still best spent with doors open and fan high.

Out on the highway

At 120 on Sheikh Zayed Road the Jolion is settled and reasonably quiet. Ask for more with four people and cold air on board and the 1.5 turbo works audibly for it, so this isn't the car for impatient overtakers; our Jetour T2 is. It cruises, it keeps up, it sips from its 55 litre tank slowly enough that a full week of mixed driving often needs just one fill. That's the assignment, completed.

The bottom line

Rent this Jolion if you're one or two people, or a young family, living a city week: work runs, groceries, friends across town, one or two highway outings. It's cheap to run, painless to park and unremarkable in the best way.
