A week of commuting on Sheikh Zayed Road is where the Mazda 6 and the CX-5 split most clearly. It's also the booking most people who want to rent Mazda cars in Dubai have in mind. Bintali rents both: the Mazda 6 sedan in 2023 and 2024 form, and the CX-5 in 2023 and 2024, each with the 2.5-litre engine driving the front wheels. If the week turns into two, you extend from your phone mid-trip without bringing the car back to us first. A driver alone on the E11 should take the 6. The CX-5 earns its place once there's a child seat, a kerb, or a weekend out of town involved.
Mazda 6 or CX-5 for a week on Sheikh Zayed Road
For a solo commute, the 6. It sits lower and it's quieter at 120 km/h. The 2.5-litre engine and six-speed automatic settle into a lazy cruise between Marina and DIFC and use less fuel than the same engine hauling the taller CX-5. What settles it is that the 6 is the nicer car to sit in for an hour a day, with a low seat and steering that holds its line in the crosswind on the Business Bay bridge.
The CX-5 makes its case the moment you park. At 4.55 m it's about 30 cm shorter than the 6, and its hatch opens onto 442 litres with a flat floor, so the DIFC spiral car park and a supermarket trolley are both easier. The 6's 474-litre boot is bigger on paper, but the sedan opening limits it. Two large cases go in either car. A folded pushchair goes in the CX-5 with less thought.
Ignore the year when you rent Mazda cars in Dubai
There's no reason to pay attention to the year on these two. The 6 has had the same body and 2.5-litre engine since well before 2023, and the 2024 cars differ from the 2023 cars in nothing you'd notice from the driver's seat. The same goes for the 2023 and 2024 CX-5. Book on colour and on which card is free for your dates.

Where the CX-5 wins: kerbs, child seats, and the Hatta road
Take the CX-5 for anything that isn't a straight commute. Its ground clearance is just under 20 cm against roughly 16.5 cm on the 6, which is the difference between slowing for every speed hump in JVC and forgetting they're there. The higher seat makes a child seat easier to strap in. On the Hatta road, which is tarmac all the way, either Mazda is fine, and the CX-5 is the one with room for a cool box.
What the CX-5 on our grid is not is a four-wheel drive. Every Mazda card here drives the front wheels, so the soft sand at the edge of a beach car park is its limit. If a dune run is part of the week, you want the four-wheel drives on another grid, where the Patrol and the Tahoe do that job properly.
Too much car for the cheapest commute
If the whole point is the cheapest possible commute, the Mazda 6 is more car than you need. The MG5 and the Geely Emgrand on their own grids do the same E11 run with a smaller engine and a plainer cabin. If the car is for client visits and you want more presence, the MG8 is the newer and larger sedan, while the Audi A3 is smaller than the 6 despite the badge. Families of six or seven should skip Mazda altogether, because nothing on this grid has a third row, and the seven-seaters live with the SUVs.

Yes, and it's the car on this grid we'd put on that run. The trip is about 130 km each way from the Marina, and the 6 has cruise control and a 62-litre tank, so with the 2.5-litre engine you're filling up roughly every third day rather than every other one. The seat sits low enough that the sun on the E11 at 7 am is a visor job, so bring sunglasses you can drive in. The CX-5 does the same run with more wind noise at 120 km/h and a fill-up about a day sooner.
Is the Mazda CX-5 rental in Dubai a four-wheel drive?
No, and if you want a car this size with all four wheels driven, the Geely Tugella and the Volkswagen Tiguan are the ones on our fleet. The CX-5's clearance is enough for graded gravel, so the hard-packed lot at the Al Qudra lakes and the last unpaved stretch to a wadi picnic spot near Hatta are fine. If the front wheels ever spin on soft sand, stop rather than dig in, and call us before a stranger offers a tow rope.
Do the Mazda 6 and CX-5 have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto?
Yes, both years of both cars, with a cable. The USB ports are inside the centre armrest box rather than on the dashboard, which is where people go looking for them at handover. Plug in before you leave us and check the screen picks the phone up, because the rotary controller between the seats runs the screen once you're moving and it takes a few minutes to get used to. Both cars have a reversing camera.
Can I rent Mazda cars in Dubai for a few days and then extend?
Yes, and the one rule is to ask before the return time on your booking, not after it. Message us with the new date and we check it against the next booking on that car; if your particular 6 is promised to someone else, we'll say so and offer the closest thing on the grid, usually the same car in the other year or colour. Around Eid and the December school break, ask two or three days ahead, because both Mazdas are spoken for on those dates.
How much luggage fits in the Mazda 6 for an airport run?
Two large cases flat in the boot and two cabin bags on top of them, with room left for a laptop bag. A 30-inch hard case goes in end-first, so load the cases before the soft bags. Four people with four big cases is past either Mazda with all seats in use; the CX-5 takes three large cases stacked and the fourth rides on the rear seat between two passengers.
