What luxury car rental in Dubai means here
It means the cars Dubai's own residents buy at the top of the mainstream market: the Patrol and Tahoe as the full-size family SUVs, and the 420i as the weekend convertible. The Patrol has a 5.6-litre V8, eight seats, and a proper four-wheel-drive system. The Tahoe has a 5.3-litre V8, seven seats, and four-wheel drive with low range.
The 420i is a four-seat convertible with a 2.0-litre turbo and a fabric roof. Comprehensive insurance is included in every rate, which on cars this expensive to repair is the line worth noticing, and the rest of the car's terms are shown at checkout before you pay.
Patrol or Tahoe for eight people and their cases
Take the Patrol for eight people or for sand, and the Tahoe for seven people with luggage. The Patrol seats eight in a two-three-three layout and leaves about 470 litres behind the third row, which is two large cases and soft bags. The Tahoe seats seven and leaves 722 litres behind its third row, four large cases with room to spare.
Fold both third rows and the difference shrinks, but for a family of six flying in with checked luggage and needing every seat, the Tahoe's boot is the deciding fact. The Patrol wins on the eighth seat, on the road feel, and on being the car built for the desert, though off-road use on a rental is confirmed at booking, not assumed.
Both are over five metres long. Mall car parks are fine. Older Deira and Bur Dubai buildings are not, and neither is a tight Marina tower ramp with the mirrors out.
The 420i, the one that isn't an SUV
The 420i is the car to take when the point is the drive, not the passengers. It's a four-seater in name with two small rear seats, a boot of 385 litres with the roof up and 300 with it down, and an 18-second roof that works at car-park speed. Between October and April it's the best thing in this class for two people staying in the Marina or on the Palm, and from May to September the roof stays up until nine in the evening.

Where to go instead
If you want the car for meetings and airport pickups rather than for itself, the MG8 and BMW X1 in the business class do that job without the size. If the drive is the point and a V8 noise is part of it, the Mustang and Camaro among the sports cars are the honest answer. The luxury class is for the family that wants the biggest, most comfortable car for a fortnight, and for the couple that wants the BMW with the roof down.
For the family of six with luggage, the Tahoe. For eight people, or a Liwa weekend agreed at booking, the Patrol. For two people and a winter fortnight, the 420i, roof down at nine in the evening on Jumeirah Beach Road.

Only if it's agreed at booking. The Patrol is built for sand, with a real four-wheel-drive system and the ground clearance for the Liwa or Al Qudra dunes, but off-road use under our rental terms is confirmed car by car before you pay, not assumed from the badge. Patrol or Tahoe for the Abu Dhabi and Al Ain roads?
Either, comfortably. Both hold 120 km/h on the E11 with a full load and cool eight or seven people quickly with the rear air conditioning. The Patrol is the softer ride and the quieter of the two at speed, and the Tahoe has the bigger boot for the luggage that comes with a two-city trip.
If the week is mostly motorway with a full car, the Patrol. If it's an airport run and a week of Dubai with the family, the Tahoe.
