Standard car rental in Dubai

With us, "standard" is a compact crossover, not a Camry. That surprises people who arrive from other markets expecting a mid-size saloon, so it's worth saying plainly: a standard car rental in Dubai from Bintali means a 5-seat crossover like the Geely Coolray, Haval Jolion, Exeed LX, or Volkswagen T-Roc, with the boxier Jetour T2 at the top of the class. It's the biggest class we run, around forty cars, and the one that goes fastest in the winter months, so we let you book early and cancel free if the plan changes.

What's left to decide is which of the crossovers suits you, and whether a mid-size car rental in Dubai is even the right size for your group.

What standard car rental in Dubai means in practice

A standard car here is a 5-seat compact crossover with a boot between 330 and 450 litres, an automatic gearbox, and front-wheel drive. Think of it as a hatchback that sits higher and carries more, not as an SUV. The Coolray, Jolion, Exeed LX, GAC Emkoo, and GAC GS3 Emzoom are all within a few centimetres of each other in length, around 4.3 to 4.4 metres, and all fit a normal mall bay.

The T-Roc is the same size with a German badge. The Jetour T2 is the odd one out: 4.8 metres, squared-off, and it looks like it belongs in a wadi, which we'll come back to.

If you were picturing a mid-size saloon, the Mazda 6 lives with the sedans. If you were picturing something with seven seats or a proper four-wheel-drive system, that's an SUV.

Coolray, Jolion, or T-Roc

Take the Coolray if you want the cheapest way into a crossover, the T-Roc if boot space decides it, and the Jolion if you'll spend hours in traffic. The Coolray is the entry point and it's a good one: a punchy turbo engine, a decent screen, and a boot around 330 litres that takes two medium cases. The Jolion has the roomiest back seat of the three and the softest ride, which matters on the Al Khail Road crawl at six in the evening, but its boot is no bigger than the Coolray's.

The T-Roc has the biggest boot of these at 445 litres and the most settled feel at 120 km/h on Sheikh Zayed Road. Between the Coolray and the T-Roc for a couple with two big cases, the T-Roc.

The Exeed LX and Emkoo sit in between, with the Exeed the more comfortable and the Emkoo the more striking to look at. The GS3 Emzoom is the newest design and the one to pick if a screen and a camera view matter more to you than the ride.

Where the weekly mileage matters

A weekly booking includes 2,100 km, which covers roughly seven Dubai to Abu Dhabi round trips, or a Hatta day, an Al Ain day, and a week of commuting. That's the number to check against your plan, because this is the class people pick for long weeks. Any of the crossovers is comfortable on the E11 for the Abu Dhabi run.

The T-Roc and Exeed LX are the quietest at motorway speed. The Jetour T2 is the least, because its shape pushes a lot of air, but it makes up for it with the tallest cabin and the widest opening at the back.

Sizing down to economy, or up to an SUV

If you're one or two people who'll mostly drive in the city, size down. A Nissan Sunny or an MG3 from the economy cars does the same commute for less and parks in tighter bays. If you're five with luggage, or you're planning any track that isn't tarmac, size up to the SUVs, where the Chevrolet Tahoe is the only car with a real four-wheel-drive system and the space to carry seven people and their cases.

On the Jetour T2: it looks like an off-roader and the brochure calls it one, but on a rental it's a tarmac car unless off-road use has been agreed at booking, and the same goes for every crossover here. Take it for the height and the looks, and take it to Hatta by the road.
