Where you'll charge
The public network is DEWA's Green Charger stations at malls, petrol stations, and some residential communities, paid through the DEWA app, with a guest mode that lets you scan the QR code on the charger and pay without an account. The Teslas can also use Tesla's own Superchargers, of which Dubai has a handful, including on the Abu Dhabi road. A villa with a normal wall socket adds roughly 10 to 15 km of range per hour, which is slow but covers a commute overnight.
Many tower car parks and hotels now have a charger, and it's worth asking your building or hotel before you book rather than after. The charge level the car needs to come back with is shown in the car's terms at checkout, so you know before you pay.

Plan on 70 to 80 percent of the official range in summer, with the cabin cooling fighting a 45-degree afternoon. In practice that's around 350 km for the 2021 Model 3, around 400 km for the Model Y, and closer to 480 km for the Model S, from a full charge. The Dubai to Abu Dhabi round trip is about 280 km, so it's comfortable in any of them on one charge if you leave full and don't detour.
Pre-cool the car while it's still plugged in and the range figure you see in the morning is the one you'll get. In winter, expect the official numbers.
Model 3, Model Y, or Model S
The Model 3 is the commuter and the cheapest way into an electric car. It has a 425-litre boot plus a front trunk, seats five, and does a Dubai working week on one charge. The Model 3 Performance is the same car with a lot more speed and all-wheel drive.
The Model Y is the family car: the same platform sat higher, with over 850 litres behind the rear seats including the underfloor well, and a tailgate that makes the airport run easy. The Model X seats six, with the rear doors that open upward, which is a talking point at a hotel entrance and a thing to remember under a low tower car-park ceiling. The Model S is the fastest and longest-range car here, and the one for the person who'll do the Abu Dhabi run daily.
The Cyberster is a two-seat electric roadster and the HiPhi Z a four-seat showpiece, and neither is the car to pick for a week of commuting.

Electric car rental Dubai: who should stay with petrol
If you're staying in a hotel with no charger and your days are long, rent a petrol car. The combination of no overnight charging and 300 km days means an hour at a public charger every second day, and that's a bad use of a holiday. A Mazda 6 from the sedans or a Coolray from the standard class gives you the same week without the planning.
If you have a villa socket, a tower charger, or an office charger, the electric car is the cheaper car to run and the nicer one to drive, and for a month's commuting with the car delivered free on any rental of 3 days or more, the Model 3 is the best-value car we rent.
If you can plug in where you sleep, take the Model Y. If you can't, take the Model 3 and learn the two nearest DEWA chargers on day one.

Yes, for a driver who plans the first two. DEWA's Green Charger network covers the main malls, many petrol stations, and a growing number of residential communities, and the Teslas can also use the Superchargers in Dubai and on the Abu Dhabi road. The gaps are in older districts like Deira and Bur Dubai, where public chargers are scarce.
Before you book, find the nearest DEWA charger to where you're staying and the nearest one to where you'll spend the day. With those two, the week runs itself.

Yes. The round trip is about 280 km, which sits inside the Model 3's summer range with a margin of about 70 km, and inside its winter range with much more. Leave with a full charge and it's a single-charge day.
If you want to add a detour to Yas or Saadiyat, top up at a Supercharger on the E11 or a DEWA charger before heading back. In a Model Y or Model S the question doesn't arise at all.
Is an electric car rental in Dubai cheaper to run than petrol?
Yes, on the running cost, if you charge at home. Electricity from a villa socket or building charger costs a fraction of the petrol for the same distance, there's no fuel to replace at the end, and Salik and parking are the same for both. Public fast charging costs more than home charging but still less than fuel for a comparable car.
