Take the Sunny if you want the biggest boot for the least money, and the MG3 if you'd rather have the nicer car. The Sunny is the cheapest car we rent, and it's a better car than its reputation: a soft ride, a 490-litre boot that swallows two large cases and a cabin bag, and an air conditioner that copes with August. Where people regret it is the week that includes two Abu Dhabi runs, because the Sunny's daily mileage allowance on our card is lower than the rest of the class.
Check that line before you book it for long days.
The MG3 is the one renters come back for. It's the newer design, the cabin is quieter, and it parks in spaces the Sunny won't. Its boot is about 300 litres, so a couple with two big cases will be putting one on the back seat.
The Corsa and the Citroen C4 sit next to it at a similar level. Between the three, the C4 has the most boot at 380 litres and the softest seats, and the Corsa is the sharpest to drive.
Hatchback or small saloon for the parking
If most of your driving ends in a mall car park or a Marina tower, take one of the hatchbacks. The MG3 and Corsa fit the tight bays under JBR and Marina Walk without a three-point turn, and the reversing camera on the MG3 makes the underground ramps easier than they look. A Sunny, Dongfeng Shine, or Geely Emgrand is a full-length saloon and asks for a wider bay, but it gives you a separate boot that keeps luggage out of sight and a cabin that cools faster because the boot isn't part of it.
For one or two people with hand luggage, the hatchback. For a family flying in with checked bags, the saloon, and the Emgrand is the nicest of the three to sit in.
What an economy car costs to run in Dubai
Fuel is the smallest line. The two you'll notice are Salik and parking. A daily commute from the Marina to DIFC passes the Al Barsha and Al Safa gates each way, so that's four toll charges a day before you've parked.

Inside the economy class itself, the JAC JS4 and JAC S3 are the halfway house: crossover height, a taller boot, and the same running cost as the hatchbacks.
